A letter from a reader

At 58, I thought dresses just weren't for me anymore. I was half right.

Hello. My name is Karen and I have never written anything like this before, so if it sounds a bit rough around the edges, that's why.

I expect you are scrolling past this thinking the same thing I would: it is an advert, of course she likes it, where is the catch. Fair enough. I would think that too. I am a 58 year old woman in Hobart who lives with a golden retriever and a fairly small pension, and I do not get excited about clothes. I am writing because something small happened and I keep finding myself telling friends about it, so I thought I would write it down once.

The quiet lie I had been telling myself

For about ten years now I had settled into a kind of rule without ever saying it out loud. Comfortable or feeling like myself. Practical or pretty. I kept choosing comfortable, because at my age, in my body, after a certain number of weddings and funerals, you just stop expecting the second one to still be on the table.

It did not feel like a sad decision at the time. It felt sensible. I wore good trousers, soft knits, things with a bit of stretch that I could bend down in without thinking. Nobody complained. I just sort of quietly closed a door and forgot it was there.

Comfortable or feeling like myself. I did not know those were supposed to be different things until they weren't.

A wedding, a niece, and a small shop called Bruny Boutique

Then my niece got married in early autumn. I had my outfit sorted, the safe navy thing, and then I went round to my sister's for a coffee the week before and my niece came in wearing the most unassuming long dress I had ever seen. Not a bride dress, just a dress. It moved when she moved. I said something stupid like 'oh that's lovely' and she laughed and said 'Aunty Karen, I got it from a little boutique, you have never heard of it.'

The boutique is called Bruny Boutique. It is a small place and from what I can tell they do one thing well: dresses that are meant to be worn by women who are not twenty two any more, in sizes and shapes that actually exist on real bodies. They have a wide range, day dresses, longer ones, plain colours, a few prints, nothing that shouts. I had a look on my phone that night, slowly, the way you do when you are trying not to get your hopes up.

The one I kept coming back to was called Soleil, a graceful V-neck dress with a soft pleated shape that just falls rather than clings. I read the page three times before I let myself add it to the cart, and even then I nearly closed the tab.

The lunch where three separate people said something

I wore it to a long lunch the weekend after the wedding. Nothing fancy, just a birthday for an old school friend at a place with tables in the garden. I was the most dressed up person there by a country mile and I kept wanting to apologise for it.

Then it started. The friend who never notices anything, Diane, looked at me over her glasses and said 'Oh, Karen.' That is all she said. Then my sister's friend leaned across and asked where it was from. Then a woman I had only met twice said she had been looking for something exactly like that for two years. Three separate women, three separate conversations, none of them prompted by me.

Worn to a family lunch in the garden, feeling more dressed up than anyone else.

Three things I have learnt, now that I have worn it a few times

One. The fabric does most of the work, so you do not have to. It is a lightweight stretch material and I had assumed that meant clingy, the way some jersey dresses are clingy in all the wrong places. It is not. It moves with you and then settles, which is a small miracle if, like me, you have spent a decade sucking in at the table.

Two. The V-neck is the bit I was wrong about. I have always covered my chest because I thought that was the rule. The neckline on this one is modest but shaped, and it frames rather than reveals. I felt looked after in it, which is not a word I thought I would ever use about a neckline.

Three. A back zip sounds like a small detail until you try it. No wrestling. No turning into a pretzel in the bathroom. You step into it, zip, done. On a hot day, when your hands are damp, that matters more than I can put into words.

The part where I expected the catch

I want to be honest about this bit, because it is the bit that nearly stopped me. The dress was $75.95. I looked at the same dress a few pages later and the original price was $189.95, and my first thought was not 'what a bargain'. My first thought was 'who is paying a hundred and ninety dollars for a dress from a shop I have never heard of, and what is wrong with this one.'

There was no catch that I could find. Bruny Boutique is a small place selling direct, no middleman, and the reason it is reduced is that the shop is twenty two years old this year and they are running an anniversary sale. That is the whole story. They have a 30 day returns policy, which I read twice because I was looking for the small print, and there is no small print.

Before I ordered I did the thing I always do and went looking for reviews. The rating is 4.6 across 807 reviews, which is what made me trust it, because a perfect five out of five from twelve people means nothing and a 4.6 from hundreds means somebody is being honest. That is also why I am writing this, because I trust a recommendation a bit more when the score is slightly imperfect.

What I would say to you over a cup of tea

If a friend told me all of this over tea I would nod politely and then go home and do nothing, because that is what I do. So all I will say is have a proper look. Open the page, read the description, look at the pictures, and if it speaks to you the way it spoke to me then order it and wear it somewhere ordinary and see what happens.

I would rather you made up your own mind than feel pushed by me. I am not on commission. I am not even a writer. I am just a woman in Hobart who would like other women my age to stop closing that door.

The twenty second anniversary sale is on at the moment and the nicest colours do tend to go first, so I would not leave it for weeks if you are tempted.

I live in these now. I did not see that coming.
