A letter from a reader

At 58, I had quietly given up on the kind of bag I actually wanted to carry.

I have never written anything like this before. I am not a writer and I do not pretend to be one. I wrote this for the little boutique I bought the bag from, after the afternoon I am about to tell you about, and they wrote back and asked if they could share it. I said yes, on the condition they did not tidy my sentences up too much. So if a line or two sound a bit rough, that is why.

The choice I thought I had made

For years I just accepted a small, annoying trade-off. A bag was either soft and easy on my shoulder, or it looked like something I actually wanted to be seen with. One or the other. Not both.
