A letter from a reader
At 58, I gave up on pockets. Then this dress turned up.
I have never written one of these before, so let me get the obvious out of the way. Yes, this is the kind of page that usually makes me scroll past. I am 58, I live in Hobart with my golden retriever, and I am not a fashion writer. I do not own a fashion writer's vocabulary. I do not own a fashion writer's shoes, come to think of it.
But my daughter forwarded me the link and said, 'Just read it, Mum, it's a small shop.' And I did. So here we are. I will keep it short and tell you what actually happened.
I had stopped looking for the right dress
For years I had quietly settled into the same trap. You know the one. You stand in front of the wardrobe and you give up on the dress and reach for trousers and a top, because trousers are sensible and tops do not let you down. Practical wins. Pretty loses. Comfortable wins. Feeling like myself loses. Nobody chooses this, it just happens, one boring morning at a time.
I stopped buying dresses in my fifties. I told myself it was because my legs were not what they were. The truth is I could not find one that did not cling somewhere or pull somewhere else, and I could not be bothered with a handbag the size of a small suitcase just to carry my keys. So dresses quietly disappeared.
Practical won, pretty lost, and I stopped noticing I had stopped wearing dresses.

My sister wore it first
The thing that changed my mind was not an ad. It was my sister Margaret at a Saturday lunch, looking annoyingly comfortable in a cotton dress I had never seen before. I asked where it was from and she said a small Australian shop called Bruny Boutique. I went home that night and looked them up. They are a small boutique, and they have a proper range of designs, not a thousand of the same thing.
The one she was wearing had a zip pocket on the hip. A pocket that closes. I did not know that was the thing I had been wanting for about ten years.
I ordered the Noeleen in my usual size, expecting to send it back. That is the bit I am still a bit smug about.

Even Janet noticed
I wore it to my niece's birthday in our sister's garden. Four people asked about it before lunch. Four. Including my friend Janet, who has not noticed what I have worn since about 2009. She looked me up and down and said, 'That actually suits you,' which from Janet is practically a standing ovation. I had put my phone and my keys in the zip pocket and my hands were free for a plate of cake and a glass of something cold. I had forgotten what that felt like.

Three things I learned the hard way
One. A pocket that zips is not a small thing. I always thought pockets in dresses were a nice idea and then I lost a house key at a wedding. The zip pocket on the hip on this one takes a phone, keys or a card and stays shut when you sit down. I walked around a garden for four hours and nothing moved.
Two. Cotton that breathes matters more than I admitted. I run warm and most dresses I have tried end up on the back of a chair by three in the afternoon. The Noeleen is pure cotton and I wore it on a warm day and forgot I was wearing it, which is the highest praise I can give any piece of clothing.
Three. An A-line that skims is a different creature. I have spent years avoiding anything with a waist in case it reminded me I have one. This one falls loosely from the shoulders and skims past the hips without clinging. It ends mid calf, sleeves sit neatly on the upper arm, round neck. Nothing grabs. Nothing pulls. I just look like me on a good day.

About the price
I sat with the page open for a bit before I ordered, because $90.95 next to $179.95 does look like the kind of number that usually comes with a catch.
I read the reviews first. 4.8 stars across 719 reviews. Not a suspiciously perfect five, which is what made me trust it more, if anything. People said the cotton was soft, the pockets actually closed, and the sizing was honest.
When the dress turned up there was no catch. Bruny Boutique is a small boutique selling directly. The reason it is on sale is their 22 year anniversary sale, which is the kind of reason I can believe. Returns within 30 days if it does not suit, and that was that.
If you asked me over tea
I would tell a friend this. Try it. Order your normal size, wear it around the house for an evening, and see if you forget you are wearing it the way I did. There is no rush, no clever sales pitch from me, I am just a woman in Hobart who got her dresses back.
The anniversary sale is on and the nicest colourways go first, which I only mention because I would not want a friend to miss the one she wanted.
I live in these now. I did not see that coming.
