A letter from a reader

At 58, I had quietly given up on finding a summer dress I actually wanted to wear.

I have never written one of these before. The thought would have made me laugh a month ago.

If you are reading this on your phone and your finger is hovering over the back button, I understand. I would be the same. I am not a fashion writer. I am a 58 year old woman in Hobart with a golden retriever who sheds on everything I own, and I am writing this because my sister told me to and because I am still slightly stunned by what happened.

The choice I thought I had made

For years I dressed for comfort and told myself that was the same as dressing for myself. It is not, and I knew it. I just stopped noticing.

Practical shoes, sensible trousers, the same three t shirts in rotation. If something was pretty it was also flimsy, and if something was comfortable it had no shape and no colour and made me look like I had given up, which, honestly, I had a bit. Nobody sits down and chooses this. It just happens, one boring washing load at a time.

I told myself I was too old for a summer dress that flattered me. I told myself pockets were the only feature worth caring about. I told myself a lot of things that were not quite true.

I thought it was comfort or feeling like myself. I did not realise they could be the same dress.

My granddaughter, and a small shop I had never heard of

We were at my daughter s place for a Sunday lunch and my granddaughter, who is six and has no filter at all, looked at me and said, Nanna, why do you always wear the same shirt. Everyone laughed. I laughed too, because she was right.

That evening my sister sent me a link to a dress called Janice from a small boutique called Bruny Boutique. She said, just look, you do not have to buy it. I looked. The shop has a proper range, not a handful of things, and the dress had pockets and was cotton and came in colours I would actually wear.

I ordered it that night, mostly to stop my sister asking.

The lunch where everyone noticed

I wore it the following weekend to a friend s birthday lunch in a garden. It was one of those long, slow afternoons where the bread keeps coming and nobody is in a hurry.

Three separate people asked where it was from before the main course. Sue, who has known me for thirty years and never once commented on what I was wearing, leaned across the table and said, Karen, you look really lovely today. Sue does not say things like that. Sue has a face like a weather report and I love her for it.

By the time we had pudding I had written the website down four times on four different napkins.

Three things I learnt from one dress

One. Pockets are not a small thing. They are the whole reason I can leave the house without a bag over my shoulder for once. Phone, keys, lip balm, all in there. I did not realise how much the handbag had been doing until I did not need it.

Two. Cotton that breathes is worth paying for. We had a warm afternoon and I never once thought about what I was wearing, which is the highest praise I can give a piece of clothing. It has been through the wash twice and is already softer.

Three. An A line that skims is doing you a favour. It sits on the body without clinging anywhere I do not want it to cling. The short sleeves land in a flattering spot on the upper arm. I felt put together without feeling dressed up.

The part I was suspicious about

I almost talked myself out of it when I saw the price. A cotton dress with pockets from a small shop for $97.95, when the original price is $244.95. That is a big gap, and I have been burned before by sales that are not really sales.

I sat with it for a day. Then I read the reviews. 4.8 stars across 900 reviews, which is not a suspiciously perfect five out of five and was honestly the thing that made me trust it. Real people, including a few who said the colour was slightly different to the photo, which is exactly the sort of thing a made up review would never say.

Bruny Boutique is a small Australian boutique selling direct, and the sale is because they are marking 22 years in business. There is a 30 day return window if it does not work for you. I found no catch. I was a bit disappointed, actually, I wanted there to be one so I could put the card down.

What I would tell you over tea

If a friend asked me, I would say, just look at it on the website. That is all. Do not buy it because I bought it. Buy it because pockets and cotton and a cut that skims is a boring, sensible thing to want, and this one happens to be pretty as well.

I am not pushy about clothes and I am not going to be. But I wore it twice in the first week and I am already looking at it in another colour, which is not something I have said about a dress in about fifteen years.

It is their 22 year anniversary sale and the nicer colours were selling through while I was looking, so do not sit on it for a week like I nearly did.

I live in these now. I did not see that coming.
