At 58, I had quietly stopped expecting a floral dress to do me any favours

I have never written one of these before. I almost scrolled past, in fact, because I do not really trust the women who write them. They always sound like they are trying to sell me something, which I suppose they are. So let me be upfront: I am a 58 year old woman from Hobart who mostly wears trousers and a jumper, has a golden retriever who sheds on everything I own, and does not consider herself any kind of authority on dresses.

I am writing this because I wore a thing last weekend and three people asked about it, and a fourth, my friend Di who has not complimented me since about 2011, said I looked 'proper nice'. I still do not quite believe it happened. You can judge me later.

How I talked myself out of dresses for about ten years

I had accepted a very boring compromise and barely noticed. Either something was comfortable, which usually meant a shapeless linen shift that made me look like I was on my way to a doctor's appointment, or it was pretty, which usually meant it clung somewhere I did not want it to cling. I stopped trying. I bought trousers. I bought more trousers.

Nobody sits down at 48 and decides this, by the way. It just sneaks up on you, one returns counter at a time.

My daughter turned up in it, and I lost my footing a little

It was a Sunday lunch at my sister's place. My daughter arrived in this dress I'd never seen before, the kind of soft floral that looked grown up rather than girly, and it moved when she walked. My seven year old grandson took one look at me and said, 'Nana, why don't you wear pretty things?' which is the sort of thing children only say because they mean it.

I asked her where it was from and she said a small boutique called Bruny Boutique, quietly, almost as an afterthought. She told me they do dozens of designs, not just this one, which surprised me because I had assumed the place I had been looking at was just another corner of the internet.

I went home, sat on the bed next to the dog, and ordered the same one in my size. I still cannot quite explain why. It felt like the kind of small brave thing a person does when they want to feel a bit more like themselves again.

We had a few friends over at the weekend, nothing grand, just a long afternoon with too much salad. I wore the dress with flat sandals and my old straw hat because I could not be bothered with anything else, and I forgot about it entirely until the second bottle of wine.

My neighbour Paula asked if it was new. The friend I mentioned, Di, asked where it was from without me bringing it up. A woman I had only met twice before, mother of one of the teenagers, came over to ask the name of the shop because she wanted one for her sister's birthday. Three separate people, not one of them trying to be polite.

I did not say anything all evening. I just ate my potato salad and tried not to look too pleased with myself, and failed, apparently.

Three things I have learned, written down so I do not forget

One. Order the size you actually are, not the size you wish you were. I have been buying trousers in a forgiving size for years and I almost did it with this as well. The dress is meant to skim, not squeeze, so the usual vanity maths does not apply. I went with my real measurements and it sat exactly where it should have.

Two. Try it with what you already own before you buy anything else to go with it. I wore it with the flat sandals I have had since summer before last, and a cardigan I was about to throw out. Both looked fine. The print is the sort that plays nicely with plain colours, so you do not need a new wardrobe to go with one dress.

Three. Move around in it before you decide. I wore mine to a long lunch that ran into a slow drive home at sunset, and the skirt just kept moving nicely beside me the whole way. If a dress does not behave when you walk, no amount of looking in the mirror is going to fix it later.

The bit where I expected to be annoyed

I will be honest, when I saw $94.95 I nearly put the kettle on and forgot about it. It was less than the boots I bought in March and considerably less than the jacket I am trying not to mention to my husband.

Before I clicked, I did the dull thing first and read the reviews. They sit at 4.8 stars across 921 reviews, which is the sort of number I trust more than a suspiciously perfect five. People said things about the fabric and the way it falls, not just that it was 'so gorgeous', which is what usually tips me off.

There is a 30 day returns window, and a 22 year anniversary sale is the reason it is marked down from $174.95, which is the kind of reason I can live with. It is a small boutique selling direct, not a clearance and not a mystery. I have looked for the catch for two weeks now and I cannot find one.

I would rather pay a fair price to a place I can name than a cheap price to a place I have never heard of.

What I would say to a friend over tea

If you came round and asked me over a cup of tea, I would tell you to have a look. That is all. I would not push it. I would say it is the first dress in a long time that has felt like something I chose, rather than something I settled for, and that the small shop it comes from seems to be run by people who actually think about what they are selling.
