A letter from a reader

At 58, I thought the dress days were behind me. I was wrong.

Hello. I have never written one of these before, so if you are already thinking, this will be a thin one, you are probably right.

I am just a woman in Hobart with a dog and a kettle that is always on, and I am typing this on my phone. If you are after a polished voice, move along. I only wanted to share what happened after I bought a dress.

The thing I had quietly accepted

For years I told myself the choice was simple. You can be comfortable, or you can feel like yourself. You can be practical, or you can be a little bit pretty. You cannot have both, and certainly not from the same hanger.

I stopped looking properly. Summer became a rotation of linen trousers and the same old t-shirt. Nobody said a thing, which is its own kind of answer.

I think I would have stayed there, neatly tucked into my own good sense, if a quiet Saturday had not landed on me.

You can be comfortable, or you can feel like yourself. I thought that was the whole list.

Laid out on the bed the night it arrived. I stared at it for a good ten minutes.

The Saturday that changed my mind

My niece turned up for a barbecue in this soft, floaty dress, all colour and movement, and my granddaughter, who is six and has no filter, looked at me and said, Nanna, why don't you wear something nice like that. The whole table laughed. I laughed too. It landed.

That evening I asked my niece where it was from. She said a small place called Bruny Boutique. I had not heard of them, which in itself was a small surprise. I had a look that night and they do dozens of designs, not just one style, and the whole site has a calm, honest feel to it. No shouting. No pressure.

I ordered a Bridget, the Beachcomber Boho one, mostly because the print made me smile. It was the first time in years I had ordered anything for myself that was not, strictly speaking, necessary.

The lunch that told me everything

I wore it to a long lunch at my friend Sandra's, the one who never notices anything, ever, and within ten minutes three different women had asked where it was from. Sandra noticed. She put down her glass.

Nobody was dramatic about it. They just kept saying it suited me, which is a word I had stopped expecting to hear about clothes a long time ago.

Worn to a relaxed family gathering in the garden, where nobody was remotely interested in photographing me.

Three things I learned the slow way

One. Order it for the life you actually have, not the life you picture. I almost talked myself out of it because I do not live by the sea and I do not lunch in vineyards. I wear it to the school pickup, to the shops, to my sister's on a Sunday. It works in all of those, which is the only test that matters.

Two. The deep V is less scary than it sounds. I am not a plunging-neckline person and I never will be. On this dress it sits in a soft V that frames the face without announcing itself, and the layered skirt does the moving so I do not have to.

Three. It goes in the machine. That part matters more than people admit. I have a golden retriever who sheds on everything I love. A dress that needs a special wash is a dress I stop wearing by August. This one comes out of the machine, I hang it on the line, and it is ready again.

The part I was suspicious of

I almost closed the tab when I saw the price. A dress like this, from a proper little boutique, was $120.95, marked down from $201.95, and my first thought was, there will be a catch.

There was not. It is a small boutique selling directly, and they are honest about why. It is their twenty-two year anniversary sale, which I read twice because I am that sort of person.

Before I ordered I sat and read the reviews, the way you do. 4.7 stars across 959 reviews, and not one of them a flat five, which is exactly why I trusted it. Real people, real opinions, a few small grumbles about sizing that were answered kindly.

What I would tell you over tea

If a friend asked, I would say, just have a look. There is no clever sales pitch in this. Have a look, see if anything speaks to you, and decide for yourself.

I am not going to push you. I only know that I had given up on this sort of thing without quite noticing, and now I am back in it, quietly and on my own terms.

It is their anniversary sale and the nicer pieces do tend to go first, so if something catches your eye, it is worth a look sooner rather than later.

I live in these now. I did not see that coming.
