At 58, I stopped expecting to feel like myself in a nice dress

A letter from a reader

At 58, I stopped expecting to feel like myself in a nice dress

I have never written one of these before and I do not really know where to start, so I'll just say what you are probably thinking. Yes, it is sponsored. Yes, someone sent me a discount. I am still going to tell you what I actually thought, because there is no point in me being here otherwise. I am 58, I live in Hobart with a golden retriever who eats everything I leave within reach, and I am not a fashion writer. I am the woman at the counter in her cardigan.

The choice I'd quietly given up on

Here is the thing I think women my age fall into without anyone deciding it for us. You can have a dress that is comfortable, or you can have one that makes you feel like yourself. You can have something practical, or you can have something a bit pretty. Nobody chooses that. It just becomes the way things are, year after year, until one day you look at the wardrobe and realise you have been dressing for going out without actually going out, in your head.

I am not complaining. I had accepted it. I had my nice trousers, my trusted sandals, the one top I rotate. It was all very sensible and I was happy enough. Happy enough is the warning sign, by the way. You start saying happy enough and stop noticing what you have quietly stopped wearing.

The dress laid out on the dresser the night it arrived, before I had even tried it on.

Then my sister turned up in the dress, of all people

It was my younger sister's birthday lunch. She walked in wearing a soft ribbed midi dress with a little knot at the waist and a slit up the leg, and I genuinely stared. She is forty-eight. She looked like she had just stepped off a small boat somewhere warm. I said, very casually, where on earth did you get that, and she said a little boutique called Bruny Boutique. I had never heard of it.

I went home that night and looked properly. They are a small boutique, not one of the big ones, and they had a whole range of designs, not just one dress in three colours. There were ribbed knits, there were softer drapey things, there were pieces that read dressed up without trying too hard. I sat on my bed for about an hour. I have not done that about a dress in a long time.

I ordered the Cady, the ribbed knot-waist midi she was wearing, in the beige. It arrived in a small box, tissue paper, the whole proper arrival. My dog was very interested.

Fresh out of the postal box, tissue paper still on it, morning light on the dresser.

The lunch that told me everything

I wore it to a friend's house for a long Sunday lunch, a real one with too much bread and people staying until the light went. I expected nobody to say a word, honestly. I expected to be the woman in the background in a nice dress.

My friend Linda, who has known me for thirty years and never comments on what anyone is wearing, asked where I got it before we had even sat down. Two other women at the table asked by the time the cheese came out. That is the test, I think. Not strangers, people who see you every week and normally say nothing.

At home, hands doing the usual things, the dress just getting on with the day.

Three things I learned, buying one dress at 58

One. Get the right fit and the rest will look after itself. The ribbed knit skims rather than grips, which is the difference between a dress that makes you hold your stomach and one you forget you are wearing. I knot the waist exactly where the brand suggests and it just sits there all evening.

Two. Dress it down or up, depending on the door you walk through. I have worn this with flat sandals to the farmers' market and with low heels and a thin gold chain to a dinner I nearly did not go to. Same dress, completely different occasion. That is what I kept reading about and did not believe until I tried it.

Three. Order the one you keep thinking about, not the safe one. I nearly ordered the black because it is what I always wear. I am glad I did not. Pick the colour you keep picturing, because you will wear it more than you think.

It lives in the trinket dish now when I take it off, which is how I know it has become a favourite.

The bit where I expected to be annoyed

It is $84.95. The original price on the site is $169.95. I sat with that for a minute, because I have been burned by the crossed-out price trick before.

There is no catch that I can find. It is a small boutique selling direct, which is why the middle step is missing. They are doing a 22 year anniversary sale, which is a real reason, not a marketing reason. Returns are 30 days, so if it arrives and does not suit, you send it back.

I read the reviews before I ordered, which is something I always do. The dress has 4.6 stars across 760 reviews. That number made me trust it more, not less. A perfect five out of five on 760 reviews would have made me suspicious. Real women, real mixed opinions, a strong average. That is how it actually works when something is genuinely good.

What I'd say to a friend over tea

If a friend asked me, sitting at her kitchen table, should I bother, I would say this. You have been dressing around the life you actually have for a while now. Buy the dress. Wear it on a Tuesday first, somewhere small, so the first time you feel good in it is yours. The rest follows.

I am not pushing you. I just know the feeling of putting something on and thinking, oh, there I am. I had forgotten what that was like.

The sale is on while stocks last, and the nicest colours do go first, I have seen that already.

I live in these now. I did not see that coming.
