How to Wash Linen So It Lasts and Gets Softer

Linen is one of the few fabrics that rewards you for keeping it. Cared for gently, a good linen top grows softer and lovelier with every wash and lasts for years, often outliving everything else in the drawer. The care is simple, but a few small habits make all the difference. Here is how I wash linen so it lasts.

Wash cool and gentle

Linen prefers a cold or cool wash on a gentle cycle. Hot water is the main thing that can shrink natural linen or wear it out before its time, so keep the temperature down and your linen will keep its shape and size. A mild detergent is all you need. Skip the fabric softener, which coats the fibres and actually stops linen from softening naturally the way it is meant to.

Give it room

Do not cram the machine. Linen washes best with space to move, so it rinses clean and creases less. Turning a piece inside out before washing helps protect the surface, and washing linen with like colours, at least for the first few washes, keeps everything looking fresh.

Dry it kindly

The gentlest way to dry linen is on a line or a rack, out of harsh direct sun, which can fade colours over time. If you prefer the dryer, use a low heat and take the piece out while it is still very slightly damp. That small habit keeps linen soft and prevents the stiffness that a full hot dry can cause. Linen dries quickly on its own, so it rarely needs long in the machine at all.

About the wrinkles

Linen wrinkles. It is part of its nature and part of its charm, and many women grow to love the soft, relaxed look. If you would like it smoother, iron while the piece is still a little damp, on a warm setting, or simply hang it in the bathroom while you shower and let the steam relax the creases. There is no need to fight the fabric. A little softness suits it.

The reward for good care

Do this and your linen will thank you. It softens a little more each season, keeps its colour and shape, and becomes the piece you reach for first, year after year. Few things in a wardrobe improve with age. Linen is one of them.

Our Madeleine top is made to soften and last with exactly this kind of gentle care, and our linen pieces are chosen with that same easy, lasting comfort in mind. For more, read why women over 50 love 100% linen and our comparison of linen vs cotton for summer.
